Miley Cyrus Franklinben, Tennesseben, Nashville külvárosában született 1992. november 23-án. Apja Billy Ray Cyrus, híres country énekes, anyja pedig Leticia "Tish" Cyrus. Négy testvére van. Két lány, Noah és Brandy, továbbá két fiú testvére, Trace és Braison, és van egy féltestvére is Cody. Miley igazi neve Destiny Hope, mert a szülei azt gondolták, hogy az életben sokra viszi majd... Becenevét onnan, kapta, hogy sokat mosolygott, így a Smiley szóból lett a Miley. Keresztmamája Dolly Parton, híres country énekes.

Karrier
Az első szerepe 2003-ban volt, apja mellett játszott a Doki c. tv sorozatban. Még abban az évben a mozivásznon debütált a Big Fish(Nagy Hal) című filmben amiben Ruthie-t alakította. Majd Rhonda Vincent 'If Heartaches have Wings' klippjében szerepelt. Szerepelt a Colgate Country Showdown-ban, édesapjával Billy Ray Cyrus-szal. Még csak 12 éves volt, amikor először énekelt apukájával a színpadon.
Aztán jött a nagy áttörés, a Hannah Montana.
2006. június 22-én élő koncertet adott, a floridai Disney World-ben, Hannah Montanaként, majd a The Cheetah Girls nevű trióval indult koncertkörútra.
2006. október 24-én megjelent a Hannah Montana soundtrack-je, ami több hétig vezette a különböző zenei listákat.
2007. június 26-án megjelent a következő lemez, mely a Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus nevet viseli. Erre az albumra Miley nyolc dalt is írt.
A Disney piacra dobott Hannah Montana ruhákat, és kiegészítőket, amiknek a tervezésében Cyrus is közreműködött. Szerinte ezek, nem nevetséges jelmezek lettek, hanem olyan ruhák, amiket Hannah és a barátai is szívesen hordanak.
2007. okt. 18-án indult útjára a Best of Both Worlds Tour, St. Louis, Missouriból, és 2008. jan. 9-én New Yorkban ért véget.
2007 december 17-én debütált első önálló klippje, a Start All Over.
2008 január 29.én végleg átiratta a nevét Destiny Hope Cyrusról Miley Ray Cyrusra.
A 'Ray' édesapja középső neve, az iránta érzett tiszteletből vette fel.
Önálló albuma július 22-én jelenik meg, ami Miley elmondása szerint megmutatja az igazi érzéseit a zene iránt.
